The kits are equipped with all the materials and instructions that participants need to take part in the program, Roy added. On Mondays, Roy and the young participants meet online via the Zoom videoconferencing platform. They work on their projects — this week, they made flying gliders out of foam — and chat among themselves and connect with library employees. Roy said the library has been offering these Teen Make-and-Take Kits through its curbside pickup service that started in July.

He said the library distributes between 8 and 15 kits a week. It was particularly popular during the summer, which is our busy months, with all our locals, plus the tourists that are here. Roy said the take-home program also is benefiting students who love STEM but in the past have been unable to attend the weekly program in person pre-pandemic, due to homework or extracurricular activities.

Now these students can pick up a kit and work on the project on their own time. The idea of these take-home kits is not unique to Kennebunk Free Library, according to Roy.

Indeed, just like the concept of curbside pickups at libraries, these kits are just another innovation taking hold at libraries across the country in response to the limitations of the pandemic. While the program is open for children ages 10 through 18, it has proven especially popular with students in middle school, according to Roy.

Roy said that the program has been so successful — and so accommodating to those students who are usually unable to attend it during set times — that it might not just be a temporary arrangement fit for the pandemic. To request more information, or to register for the program, call the library at or visit online at www.
